“Gratitude changes Everything”

Gratitude is not a superficial concept in recovery. It is a stabilising force.

At Imani, Treatment Center for Eating Disorders, we understand that recovery is about more than restoring physical health. It is about rebuilding connection. Connection to self, to others, and to the small, meaningful moments that remind us why healing matters.

As part of our therapeutic program, clients are encouraged to engage in volunteer work. Giving back creates an opportunity to step outside of the often narrow focus of an eating disorder and rediscover a sense of purpose and contribution.

Recently, a group of clients spent time volunteering at DARG. What unfolded was more than a day of service. It became a powerful lesson in gratitude.

One client reflected on the experience:

“Spending time with the dogs at DARG has really contributed to my recovery, helping me heal. The dogs gave me a very special feeling: gratitude. By simply enjoying your attention and the time you spend with them, the dogs show their thankfulness, which reminded me to appreciate the little things in life and be grateful for what I have. During my recovery journey at Imani, I have truly learned to value gratitude and the simple joys that make life meaningful. This experience has really shifted my perspective on life and recovery.”

There is something profoundly grounding about being with animals. Dogs respond with presence. They do not measure, compare, or judge. They simply receive care and return affection wholeheartedly. In that exchange, our clients are reminded that their presence alone has value.

Gratitude is not a superficial concept in recovery. It is a stabilising force. When someone begins to notice small joys, simple connections, and moments of appreciation, they start building a life that feels fuller and more meaningful. That shift in perspective can be transformative.

Experiences like volunteering at DARG reinforce an essential truth. When we offer kindness and care to others, we often receive far more than we expect. Healing grows in these shared moments of connection.

If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, compassionate support is available.
