“Finding Strength Again”

When the Body begins to Heal

At Imani Treatment Centre for Eating Disorders, recovery is about both emotional and physical healing. While much attention is often given to the emotional side of recovery, rebuilding physical strength is an equally important part of the journey.

Eating disorders place enormous strain on the body. Over time, malnutrition, restriction, purging, over-exercise, or cycles of bingeing and restriction can leave a person physically depleted. Muscles weaken. Energy drops. Concentration becomes difficult. Even everyday tasks can begin to feel exhausting.

Recovery slowly changes that.

With consistent nourishment, gentle restoration of eating, rest, hydration, and medical support, the body begins to heal. It slowly receives what it needs again to rebuild itself from the inside out. Metabolism stabilises. Muscles begin rebuilding. Energy gradually returns. The brain becomes better nourished and clearer thinking often follows.

This process can feel frightening and uncomfortable at times, especially for someone recovering from an eating disorder. The body may feel unfamiliar during healing. But over time, many people begin to reconnect with their physical selves in a healthier and more compassionate way.

Strength returns slowly. Sometimes so slowly that it is almost unnoticed at first.

Then one day, things that once felt impossible begin to feel possible again.

Recently, some of our clients experienced paragliding off Signal Hill in Cape Town. For many, the experience symbolised far more than adventure. It reflected courage, trust, movement, and the quiet rediscovery of physical strength after a long period of illness and isolation.

Recovery can carry you beyond fear and disconnection, and back into life again. Back into movement. Back into connection. Back into open skies and open spaces.

Healing is not only about surviving. It is also about rediscovering what your mind and body can do together.
