“Indie, our Therapy Dog”

Healing and Comfort at Imani Treatment Centre

There are many forms of healing. Some arrive through structured sessions, careful conversations, and the steady work of recovery. Sometimes, healing arrives in a quieter way. It walks in on four legs, sits beside you, and simply stays.

Indie came to Imani, Treatment Centre for Eating Disorders, nearly three years ago. A rescue dog with a difficult past, she arrived carrying her own story, one marked by hardship and softened by an extraordinary gentleness. No one trained her for what she would become. There were no formal commands or certifications. Yet from the very beginning, Indie seemed to understand.

She has a way of finding people. Quietly and instinctively, Indie moves toward someone who is struggling. She rests her head against a knee or sits close without intrusion, offering presence without expectation. In a space where many of our clients are learning to reconnect with themselves, Indie asks for nothing more than to sit beside them. In that stillness, something begins to shift.

The role of therapy dogs in mental health treatment is well recognised. Dogs in therapeutic settings can help reduce anxiety, regulate emotional responses, and create a sense of safety. Their presence often lowers stress levels, eases feelings of isolation, and offers connection without judgement. In eating disorder recovery, where trust and emotional safety are essential, this kind of support can be deeply meaningful.

Indie’s role, however, goes beyond theory.

She is not a textbook example of a therapy dog. She is something more intuitive and deeply felt. It may be her own history that allows her to recognise distress so clearly. It may simply be her nature. Whatever the reason, Indie meets people exactly where they are, without question.

In a recovery environment where vulnerability is part of the daily work, that kind of presence is invaluable.

Over time, Indie has become part of the rhythm of the clinic. She greets, she sits in on quiet moments, and she moves gently between spaces as if guided by instinct. For many of our clients, she becomes a source of comfort during some of their most challenging days.

In her own quiet way, Indie reminds us of something essential. Healing does not always require words. Sometimes it begins with feeling safe enough to simply be.

“Thank you, Indie, for the comfort, connection, and quiet healing you bring to all of us at Imani Treatment Centre.”
